It's A Heart Issue

Downtown Louisville: the day after the riot

There once was a time when a friend confided in me that they had an affair. He told me that he wanted to end the relationship, because he was tired of her and wanted the other woman. The wife got wind of it, and she began to wreak havoc in his life (and I mean a rapid destruction). You see, she was married previously and the same thing happened to her in her previous marriage. When you know this about someone, you should avoid doing that same thing to her. He nearly got fired, he was hated by her family, his children didn’t respect him, and he had a hard time going back to work knowing that he worked with this lady he had an affair with. He didn’t want to hear what she had to say, because it no longer matter to him at the time. Thankfully, they were able to reconcile, and slowly begin to build their lives together again, but before doing so he asked me, “Why is she so crazy? If she could do this what else would she do? I’m scared!”

My answer was, “You cheated on her. She told you over and over again how the last guy treated her. You didn’t listen to her past hurts, and now she is angry. Angry women act differently, but most of them act violently and will seek to destroy your life! You may commit the sin, but you cannot choose the consequence, and this is the consequence. And, now you hear her because she has caused chaos in your life!” Why am I telling you this? As most of you know by now there has been protest due to racial killings around America (three in a span of four months…that we know of; two due to police interaction and one civilian). This is not a new issue! It has been talked about for more years than I have been alive. Now that people are acting chaotic it has grabbed your attention in such a way that you may think they are crazy. Well, yes, yes they are, because SOME feel like this is the only way they can get your attention, and it has!

Painted red: Vandalism is NOT okay!

Before you stop reading this out of anger or irritation, let me say that while I get their point of view, I do NOT condone their behavior! This has been a teaching lesson for my children. I took them downtown today to see the aftermath of what happened. My son was appalled, and wanted to immediately go home. I told him, “No, this is history, and it should teach you a lesson. God says in His word, “In your anger do not sin” Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry” (Ephesians 4:26). This means that we are allowed to have anger towards an issue, but to sin (harm other, not show the love of Christ, destroy other’s property, etc.) is unacceptable”!

In 1992, I was nine years old, and I lived in Los Angeles, California. Rodney King’s attackers were considered not guilty in the court of law, and there was a riot that broke out because of it. As a child, I was scared. I didn’t understand why people were breaking into businesses and taking what they wanted. I look over to my left, and saw people jumping out of broken store windows carrying television sets. I look over to my right, and see a ton of people running out of a clothing store with hands full of clothes. Fast forward to 2020 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as I logged into facebook and I see that Target was raided due to George Floyd’s death, and two days later the city is destroyed. I hear my mom and son make a noise upstairs, and I dart up there to see what the matter was, and I find that the city I live in has gone crazy too. Talk about a flashback!

Another crazy shift begins! Praying for our men and women in blue!

As I watched, I saw and heard: people screaming, throwing water bottles, setting a table and trash can on fire, using picnic tables as shields, someone shooting, flash bangs, and police officers shooting non-lethal weapons all in the name of Breonna Taylor. In case you didn’t know, Breonna Taylor was 26 year old, African American, EMT worker who was fatally shot by Louisville Metro Police Department officers in her sleep. It was wrong and should have never happened. If that were my child the level of anger coming from me would be unexplainable. I pray for her family, boyfriend (who was there, and taken into custody…another bad move), and friends. George Floyd’s case really bothered me as well. I couldn’t get my mine off of him, especially as he cried out for his mom.

My children’s father is white, and I am black, and to society my children are considered black, no matter what they are mixed with. I pictured my son on the ground crying out for me and it broke me! Our African American men are being mistreated. A lot of times police are called on them due to their skin color (yes, there is proof). I had to have that talk with my son about how the world is going to view him, and about what it is like dating and marrying outside of our own race (trust me, it is a challenge). It’s not easy living life being who we are, but we are used to it. We are used to the jokes and stereotypes. It is what we have heard all of our lives.

I had a former lighter pigmented friend say, “Watch out, you’ll get pulled over because you are black…let me drive. (He said he was just playing)” I was working my security job when my boss and I confronted a woman who was causing issues. She told us what happened and said that one of our ushers treated her badly because she was a woman. She then proceeded by telling me, “You’ve got it worse! You’re colored and a woman” (twice), and then said something about Black Lives Matter. In college, my roommate was having issues with her boyfriend. He then told me that if I didn’t go away, he would curb me and then shoot me. There was a lady who told me a racist joke about black people in their family tree (I will not post the joke), and I about slapped the mess out of her. I was sitting in my car at the Summit about to go into White House Black Market to return a dress, and I was finishing up a phone call. I saw a man on a Segway, and he approached me and asked me why I was there. I told him why, and before I knew it five other guys on Segways came up to my car and said I had to leave. No, the problem hasn’t gone away. It is a heart issue, and only God can change that.

Let us pray for a change of heart in those who have an issue with the color of one’s skin. This is the ONLY way! God is the ONLY way! I love all of my friends and family (white, black, Hispanic, Jew, Asian, police, EMT, EV-ER-Y-ONE). I will not lose hope in knowing that God can and will change the hearts of man. I pray that God will open up the eyes of those whose are closed so they may see the error of their ways.

I want you to think about the pandemic that we are in. It is hard enough trying to reopen our businesses, and to catch up on making a living for our families. Why would you destroy them right when it is time to open them? Especially, when they have nothing to do with the deaths of either person that has died. We are trying to get our lives back on track, and this doesn’t help any of use one bit! I understand your point, but it doesn’t make it right! That is evil, and Satan is only using you to create more issues for us all! God is not pleased! I urge you fellow saints to pray without ceasing. Yes, pray for peace, but most importantly, pray for a change of heart! Pray for our men and women in Blue! GBY, I love you all, and good night!

P.S. White people…quit apologizing for what other white people have done. I would not apologize to you if a black person were to harm you. It has nothing to do with me…so why would I apologize?
