Are you feeling stressed out? Has this day, week, or even year been full of harsh and unwanted circumstances? Every day we are bombarded with things that get us down, or simple fill our minds to the point we lose focus on what is important. Did you know that God created us to be relational? We need other people to help us in our time of need. In Proverbs 12:25 it says, “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad.” You see, we are to uplift our neighbors with words of encouragement and words that bring forth life. Our word of encouragement is not the only way to lift the spirit of the troubled friend or family member. One simple and underrated way to bring near instant contentment and satisfaction is ….a hug!
I am reminded of every time I was mad as a young lady that my brother would come up to me and say, “do you need a hug?” His main objective was to upset me more with the tone of voice he was using, but he was on to something without really knowing it. Hugging comes with many health benefits. Did you know that hugging someone increase your oxytocin levels which promote feelings of contentment? Oxytocin is a powerful hormone within your body that impacts our social and emotional responses. It stimulates the feel-good hormones, dopamine and serotonin, production. Hugging reduces the feelings of depression and anxiety. It relieves stress, and causes your heart rate to decrease. Did you also know that it increases and strengthens ones social bonds? It also aids in feeling support and care, as well as, protects some people from the common cold.
Yes! Hugging is a medicine within itself! We all go through tough times, but a simple hug can cause your stress levels to decrease! Who wouldn’t want that? Stress is a silent killer, and someone could potentially save a life by simply giving a hug. I have met several people on my journey of life who are depressed, stressed out, feeling lonely, and feeling unappreciated, and a hug made them feel better. Maybe, it is your child who holds everything in who needs a hug to reassure them that you love them and care for them. What if your spouse feels unappreciated or overwhelmed? Just hug them and don’t forget to pray for them as well! There is power in prayer!
In Philippians 4:6-7, our Heavenly Father allowed us access to Him. It says, “be anxious for nothing, but in everything , by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” The Bible also says in 1 Peter 5:7, “casting all your cares upon Him, for He cares about you.” Oh my goodness does He care about you! There is no love greater than His! Point your friend to His word, pray for them, and of course, GIVE THEM A HUG! It makes a world of difference. GBY and have a great day!
